Gold Sports Mark for William Barnes

The children, staff and governors at William Barnes were thrilled to hear that the school has been awarded the Gold School Games award.

This government backed award is received by schools who have made the involvement of all pupils in competitive sport a priority.  The Gold level of the award is very challenging to achieve as the school has to provide evidence for a whole range of criteria.  In addition to the impressive calendar of inter school sporting events, the children at William Barnes have worked really hard to develop their leadership skills:  sports ambassadors run major events and lunchtime clubs for children less keen on sport, sports leaders in each class are responsible for warm ups, safety and equipment, Wake and Shake leaders run daily whole school dance routines, and skipping leaders supervise younger children at play times.  The school has also continued to forge links with local sports clubs, give opportunities for more able children, maintain the use of professional coaches in sports such as basketball, tennis, football, fencing and athletics, and run a competitive sports competition within the using the House system.  This year Mrs Quincey will be helping Mr Hull to develop the school’s commitment to PE even further.
